Under what circumstances should you use a 1.5× erecting eyepiece and a 2/3× Barlow lens?
The 1.5× erecting prism serves to magnify the image by a factor of 1.5 and correct an inverted image into an upright one, making it suitable for close‑range observation—typically when observing terrestrial targets. It is unnecessary when observing the sky. A refracting telescope produces an image that is laterally reversed but vertically normal; adding a 1.5× erecting prism would invert the image vertically, rendering it impractical. Therefore, using a 1.5× erecting prism with a refracting telescope is of little use. By contrast, employing such a prism with a reflecting telescope does yield an upright image.
A 2/3× magnifying lens is a 2/3‑times magnifier, typically used when the target has high contrast and sufficient illumination. After using a magnifying lens, the increased number of lens elements and the higher magnification cause each lens to attenuate the light, resulting in reduced brightness and diminished image sharpness.
* When observing planets, it’s best to avoid using a Barlow lens. The higher the magnification, the greater the impact on the image.
