LED lens Namely, the optical systems closely associated with LEDs that enhance light extraction efficiency and modify the spatial distribution of the light field. Other types of lenses, such as those used in cameras, telescopes, and the like, are beyond the scope of this discussion; this paper focuses specifically on lenses for high-power LEDs.

I. LED lens Types of materials
1. Silicone lens
a. Because silicone has excellent thermal resistance, it is often used for direct encapsulation on LED chips.
b. General silicone gel lenses are relatively small, with diameters ranging from 3 to 10 mm.
2. PMMA lens
a. Optical-grade PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate, commonly known as acrylic).
b. Plastic materials: Advantages—high production efficiency (can be manufactured via injection molding or extrusion); high light transmittance (approximately 93% at a thickness of 3 mm). Disadvantages—operating temperature must not exceed 80°C (heat deflection temperature: 92°C).
3. PC Lens
a. Optical-grade polycarbonate (abbreviated as PC).
b. Plastic materials: Advantages—high production efficiency (can be manufactured via injection molding or extrusion); slightly lower light transmittance (approximately 89% at a thickness of 3 mm). Disadvantages—operating temperature must not exceed 110°C (heat deflection temperature: 135°C).
4. Glass lens
Advantages: high light transmittance (97%) and improved room-temperature performance. Disadvantages: large size, limited shape options, fragility, difficulty in mass production, low productivity, and high cost. However, the equipment required for these processes is currently expensive, making widespread adoption challenging in the short term. Additionally, glass is more brittle than PMMA or PC materials, a limitation that calls for further research and development. At present, the only viable approaches to enhance glass’s shatter resistance involve coating or strengthening treatments. While such treatments may slightly reduce the glass’s light transmittance, it can still exceed that of conventional optical plastics by a substantial margin. Consequently, glass lenses hold considerable promise for future applications.
II. LED lens App Category
1. Disposable lenses
A. The main lens is directly encapsulated (or bonded) onto the LED chip leadframe, becoming LED lens And the whole.
B. The LED chip theoretically emits light in a 360-degree pattern; however, in practice, the chip is mounted on an LED leadframe and encapsulated, resulting in a maximum emission angle of 180 degrees (with some residual glow beyond 180 degrees). Additionally, the chip scatters some light. Consequently, a primary lens can efficiently collimate all of the chip’s emitted light and produce various beam angles; yet, LEDs with different beam angles exhibit varying levels of luminous efficacy.
2. Secondary LED Lens
A. The secondary lens and the LED are two separate components, but in practical applications they must indeed be used together.
B. The second lens functions to re‑collimate the LED light source’s emission angle to a desired range between 5° and 160°. The light‑field distribution can be broadly categorized into circular, elliptical, and rectangular patterns.
C. Secondary lens materials typically use optical-grade PMMA or PC. In special cases, glass may be selected. 。
