Optical lenses are typically optical components with spherical surfaces, made of glass or plastic. They operate on the principle of optical refraction to achieve functions such as light convergence, light divergence, and image formation. Through careful design, multiple lenses can be combined into compound lenses that optimize color correction and correct spherical aberration, among other issues.
Optical lenses are the most fundamental optical components of a microscope’s optical system; objectives, eyepieces, and condensers, among others, are all composed of single or multiple optical lenses. Based on their shape, they can be classified into two main types: convex lenses, also known as positive lenses, and concave lenses, also known as negative lenses.
A plano‑concave optical lens diverges parallel light rays; its focal length is negative, and it also exhibits negative spherical aberration. It can be used to correct astigmatism, spherical aberration, comatic aberration, and distortion introduced by other optical elements. Like other plano‑concave lenses, its convex surface typically faces the distant object plane or infinity. Plano‑concave optical lenses are commonly manufactured from K9 glass, with anti‑reflection coatings optimized for the 400–700 nm wavelength range. Alternatively, they may be fabricated using ultraviolet‑grade fused silica as the substrate; when made from this material, they offer excellent transmission in the UV region and a low coefficient of thermal expansion, allowing for the deposition of UV‑AR coatings to suit specific applications.
Plano-convex optical lenses are an ideal choice for focusing parallel light rays to a single point. These lenses are suitable for a wide range of applications and feature well‑defined focal lengths, offering near‑optimal performance for both infinity‑and finite‑conjugate configurations. A plano-convex lens can collimate a beam and focus it at its rear focal plane, or it can transform a point source into a collimated beam. Typically manufactured from K9 glass, these lenses are coated with an anti‑reflection coating optimized for the 400–700 nm wavelength range.
