Optical lens Fun fact: Optical lens What are its functions?
Lens It can be widely used in various fields, including security, automotive applications, digital cameras, lasers, and optical instruments. As the market continues to evolve, lens technology is being adopted more and more extensively. Lenses are manufactured based on the law of refraction. They are optical components made from transparent materials such as glass or crystal. A lens is a refractive optical element whose refracting surfaces consist of two spherical segments, or one spherical segment and one flat surface. It can form both real and virtual images. Convex lenses are thicker at the center and thinner at the edges; they come in three types: biconvex, plano-convex, and meniscus‑convex. Concave lenses are thinner at the center and thicker at the edges; they include biconcave, plano‑concave, and meniscus‑concave types.
The role of lenses in automotive lighting fixtures
1. Because lenses have a strong light-concentrating ability, they can be used to illuminate roads, making them not only bright but also clear.
2. Thanks to its extremely narrow beam pattern, its illumination range is both farther and clearer than that of a standard halogen lamp. As a result, you can instantly spot distant objects, preventing you from missing or losing sight of your target.
3. Compared with traditional headlamps, lens-type headlamps offer uniform brightness and superior penetration, maintaining strong visibility even in heavy rain or dense fog. This ensures that oncoming vehicles can promptly detect the light signal, helping to prevent accidents.

4. The lifespan of HID bulbs in lenses is 8 to 10 times that of conventional bulbs, thereby reducing unnecessary hassle associated with frequent bulb replacements.
5. Xenon lamps do not require any additional power‑supply system, because true HID gas‑discharge lamps must be equipped with a 12‑V voltage regulator to convert the input voltage to the proper level, ensuring stable and continuous operation of the xenon bulb. This approach helps conserve energy.
6. As described in item 5, the ballast boosts the lamp voltage to 23,000 V, enabling the xenon bulb to ignite instantly upon power-up and deliver high brightness within 4 seconds. This allows you to prepare for braking well in advance during emergencies, helping to prevent accidents—something conventional halogen lamps cannot achieve.
