What are the future trends in the development of plastic molds?

Plastic molds constitute an important segment of the mold industry, and the advent of high-speed machining has opened up an entirely new avenue for plastic mold manufacturing. Replacing electrical discharge machining with high-speed machining wherever possible is an inevitable trend for accelerating mold development and enhancing manufacturing quality.

In many industrial and consumer products, Plastic mold It is an indispensable component, with many industrial and consumer products being manufactured through it. In modern mass production, high‑quality products cannot be achieved without advanced molds, which also play a crucial role in boosting productivity and reducing manufacturing costs. According to recent international statistics, 75% of the rough machining, 50% of the finishing operations, and 90% of plastic parts are produced using molds. Consequently, the mold industry is often referred to as the “crown industry.” Today, plastic mold manufacturing has become an essential part of advanced manufacturing technologies.

Plastic mold It is an important sector of the mold industry, and the advent of high-speed machining has opened up a completely new avenue for plastic mold manufacturing. Replacing electrical discharge machining with high-speed machining wherever possible is an inevitable trend for accelerating mold development and enhancing manufacturing quality.

The main advantages of high-speed machining are:

Excellent product quality—during high-speed machining, the cutting speed is approximately ten times higher than that of conventional machining. Excess stock material is removed from the workpiece in an instant, before it has time to undergo significant plastic deformation, resulting in very low residual stresses on the surface. Moreover, more than 95% of the heat generated during cutting is rapidly carried away by the chips, minimizing thermal distortion of the workpiece. In high-speed machining, the machine tool spindle operates at extremely high speeds (10,000–80,000 r/min), with the excitation frequency well outside the natural frequency range of the “machine tool–tool–workpiece” system, ensuring a smooth, impact-free machining process. Consequently, the parts exhibit high dimensional accuracy and superior surface quality, with surface roughness reaching Ra 0.6 µm or better; after high-speed milling, the cavity surfaces can attain grinding‑level finish quality, often eliminating the need for numerous subsequent finishing operations.

High production efficiency—when molds are machined using high-speed machining centers or high-speed milling machines, rough and finish machining of the cavity as well as other mold components can be completed in a single setup, a process known as “one‑pass machining.” Cutting speeds are very high, and the overall machining efficiency is several times greater than that of electrical discharge machining. Moreover, no electrodes are required, and subsequent manual grinding and polishing are often unnecessary, making it easy to automate the machining process. Consequently, with the adoption of high-speed machining technology, the development cycle for plastic molds has been significantly shortened.

China Plastic mold Since its inception, the industrial sector has advanced rapidly. In China, in-depth research has been conducted on plastic mold design and manufacturing technologies, as well as related CAD and other supporting technologies. However, given the uneven quality of domestic molds—largely due to variations in process conditions employed by different manufacturers—modern enterprises must intensify their efforts to advance plastic mold technology. Plastic molds play a critical role across numerous industries, including machinery, electronics, automotive, information technology, aerospace, light industry, defense, transportation, building materials, healthcare, biotechnology, and energy.
