How can you quickly and straightforwardly identify the material of various optical lenses?

In LED applications, optics are the heart of the luminaire. The primary function of optical lenses is to perform secondary optical design, shaping the luminous intensity distribution of the LED light source. When we refer to “lenses” in general, we typically mean secondary lenses. In essence, the key distinction between a lens and no lens is that the former enables precise control over light, resulting in more uniform illumination. Currently, lens materials include silicone gel, polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and glass, each with its own advantages and disadvantages; among these, PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) remains the predominant material.

In In LED applications, optics is the soul of the luminaire. Optical lens Its primary function is to perform secondary optical design to shape the luminous intensity distribution of LED light sources. When we refer to a “lens” in general, we are typically talking about a secondary lens. In essence, the key difference between a lens and an un‑lensed configuration is that the former can precisely control the light beam, resulting in more uniform illumination. Currently, common materials used for lenses include silicone rubber, polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and glass, each with its own advantages and disadvantages; among these, PMMA (polymethyl methacrylate) is the predominant material.

Next, let’s examine the advantages and disadvantages of lenses made from different materials.

Silicone: High-temperature resistant 300 degrees, with a transmittance of approximately 94%. Commonly used in LED chips, UV lenses, indoor sports lighting, and industrial and mining lighting.

Disadvantages: soft texture, low hardness, high coefficient of thermal expansion, and low mechanical strength; additionally, it is prone to static electricity and easily attracts dust.

PC: It is easy to control in terms of size, low-cost, and simple to manufacture, while also offering excellent high-temperature resistance (above 150°C) and high production efficiency. Consequently, most outdoor streetlights and luminaires use PC lenses.

Disadvantage: Low light transmittance (91% with a thickness of approximately 3 mm)

PMMA, commonly known as acrylic, is a chemical material. Chemically, it is called polymethyl methacrylate and is also referred to as specially treated organic glass. Its key advantages include high production efficiency—achievable through injection molding and extrusion—and excellent light transmittance (especially for thicknesses greater than 3 mm), making it ideal for applications with stringent lighting quality requirements, such as indoor lighting, automotive headlamps, backlights, and PMMA lenses. It is also the mainstream lens material on the market and is highly resistant to scratching.

Disadvantages: High brittleness, prone to cracking, and exhibits high surface hardness. It is not resistant to high temperatures and is susceptible to thermal deformation. 90℃. When using PMMA lenses, the light source’s output power should be taken into account to ensure it aligns with the temperature range that PMMA can withstand.

Glass: High light transmittance (With a 3 mm thickness and a transmittance of 97%), it can withstand temperatures up to approximately 600°C. Glass lenses offer a long service life, typically lasting over ten years in outdoor environments without discoloration or degradation in light transmission. They are widely used in high‑precision optical instruments. As the LED industry increasingly prioritizes light quality, glass lenses hold significant potential for future development.

Drawbacks include large size, heavy weight, limited shape variety, fragility, difficulty in achieving mass production, low manufacturing efficiency, and high costs. Although a few domestic manufacturers have begun developing glass-mold fabrication technologies, using molds for melting and casting to produce glass lenses enables the creation of lenses with diverse shapes and specialized surface features. However, such production equipment remains relatively expensive, making widespread adoption challenging in the short term.

The above has introduced the methods provided by DONGGUAN YISITEGUANGDIANKEJI CO., LTD for simply distinguishing various optical lens materials.
