Streetlight Lens – Introduction to Waterproof Lenses for Outdoor Lighting

Streetlight lenses (also known as secondary optical lenses for LED streetlights) are the core optical components of outdoor LED lighting fixtures. They are primarily used to perform secondary light distribution, enhancing luminous efficacy, uniformity, and illumination coverage. Moreover, given the outdoor environment, a robust waterproof design is essential—typically meeting an IP65 or higher rating—to protect against dust and rain ingress, ensuring reliable operation even in harsh weather conditions.

Common materials
- **PMMA (Acrylic)**: High light transmittance (approximately 93%), good production efficiency, and low cost, but with limited temperature resistance (<90°C).
- **PC (Polycarbonate)**: Highly tough and impact-resistant, with a light transmittance of approximately 89% and superior temperature resistance (up to <130°C), making it ideal for demanding outdoor environments.
- **Silicone Lens**: Heat-resistant, suitable for direct encapsulation, and boasts excellent waterproof performance; commonly used in high‑protection‑grade luminaires.
- **Glass lenses**: Offer the highest light transmittance (around 97%), exhibit excellent thermal and weather resistance, but are brittle and relatively expensive.

Outdoor waterproof lenses typically use PC or silicone materials and incorporate a sealed structure to achieve water resistance.

Common Specifications and Types
- **Module Configuration**: Common configurations include single-lens modules, 28‑element arrays (4×7), and multi‑element arrays, which facilitate easy assembly.
- **Light Distribution Angle**: Design different angles (e.g., 60°, 90°, 120°, Type II/Type III distribution) based on the road type (e.g., arterial roads, residential streets).
- **Beam Shape**: Circular, elliptical, rectangular, etc.; an elliptical shape can reduce dark spots and improve road uniformity.
- **Waterproof Rating**: IP66/IP67 is common, achieved through the lamp’s overall sealing.

These lenses are widely used in outdoor lighting applications such as streetlights, courtyard lights, and floodlights, enhancing energy efficiency and reducing light pollution.
