In contrast, headlights without lenses produce scattered light, making the light source harder to control. Whether a car’s headlight includes a lens is determined at the factory: typically, the low beams have lenses, while the high beams do not—take the Toyota Prado, for example, where the low beams are lens‑equipped and the high beams are not. Why are lenses used on low beams? Because they’re the most frequently used; when the low beams are on, there’s a very distinct cutoff line. Why call it a “cutoff”? It means that excess light is effectively blocked off.

High-Power LED Chip PC Lens: This lens is made from optical-grade polycarbonate (PC). As a plastic material, PC offers high production efficiency and can be manufactured via injection molding or extrusion. Products made from this material are lightweight, shatter-resistant, and cost-effective, though their light transmittance is somewhat lower—around 89% at a thickness of 3 mm. However, PC has limited thermal resistance, with a maximum operating temperature of 110°C and a heat deflection temperature of 135°C. Currently, this material is widely used in applications where light transmittance requirements are relatively moderate.
