After fine grinding with a polishing slurry, the surface of an optical lens still retains a crack‑induced layer approximately 2–3 μm thick. The process used to remove this layer is called polishing. Polishing operates on the same principle as grinding; the difference lies in the materials of the polishing tools and the polishing slurry. Common polishing media include cloth, polyurethane pads, and pitch. For achieving highly precise polished surfaces, high‑grade polishing pitch is typically the material of choice.
The motion mechanisms used for polishing and grinding are the same; however, the polishing tools and working fluids differ, and the environmental conditions required during polishing are more stringent than those for grinding. The following precautions should generally be observed during polishing: the surface of the polishing asphalt and the polishing fluid must be free of impurities, as any contaminants can cause scratches on the mirror finish. Furthermore, the surface of the polishing asphalt must conform precisely to the lens surface; otherwise, oscillations will occur during polishing, leading to the abrasive particles becoming trapped and scratching the lens surface.
Optical lenses are made from optical glass and generally refer to lenses that transmit and manipulate visible light. Such lenses must be measured using precision optical instruments to verify that their purity, transparency, homogeneity, refractive index, and dispersion meet specified standards. Once deemed合格, the glass blanks are heated and forged into optical lens blanks. Dongsheng Optoelectronics is an optical lens manufacturer; after fine grinding with abrasive slurry, the lens surfaces still retain a thick layer of surface defects. The process used to eliminate this defect layer is polishing.
Polishing with asphalt relies on the asphalt’s fine surface to generate heat as the polishing slurry grinds the lens surface, causing the glass to melt and flow. This melts away the rough peaks and fills in the valleys of cracks, gradually removing the cracked layer. Currently, cerium oxide (CeO2) is the primary material used in polishing powders for glass lenses. The formulation of the polishing slurry varies depending on the stage of polishing: a higher‑concentration slurry is typically employed during the initial polishing phase and when the lens is mated with the polishing mold, while a more dilute solution is used once the lens surface has achieved sufficient brightness, thereby preventing the “orange‑peel” effect—surface haze or clouding.
Before polishing, it is essential to verify that the lens surface is free of scratches or pinholes left by the grinding process. Ensure that the polishing tool’s size and material are appropriate, and that the asphalt’s hardness and thickness are suitable. Throughout the polishing process, continuously monitor the lens surface condition and perform precision checks. Regarding the inspection of surface defects on lenses, since this assessment relies on individual visual judgment and methods, inspectors must have a thorough understanding of the standards for scratches and pinholes and regularly compare samples against standard reference specimens to ensure the accuracy of their evaluations.
