There are many types of optical lenses. Below, Yisite Optoelectronics will introduce some classifications of optical glass.
First, we need to understand what optical lenses are. Optical lenses are a type of glass that can alter the direction of light propagation; they are used to manufacture components such as lenses and mirrors in optical instruments. Optical glass is primarily made from high‑quality quartz sand and is employed in devices like cameras and telescopes.
1. Colorless optical glass
It has specific requirements for optical constants, exhibiting high transmittance in the visible region and lacking selective absorption or coloration. Based on Abbe number, it is classified into crown glasses and flint glasses; each category is further subdivided according to refractive index and arranged in ascending order of refractive index. It is widely used for lenses, prisms, mirrors, and other optical components in telescopes, microscopes, cameras, and similar instruments.
2. Radiation-Resistant Optical Glass
It exhibits strong absorption of high-energy radiation; examples include high-lead glass and CaO–B2O3 system glass. The former effectively shields against gamma and X-ray irradiation, while the latter absorbs slow and thermal neutrons. These materials are primarily used in the nuclear industry, medicine, and other fields as shielding and viewing-window materials.
3. Radiation-Resistant Optical Glass
Under irradiation with a specified dose of gamma rays or X-rays, the visible‑light transmittance exhibits only minor changes. Its composition and grade are identical to those of colorless optical glass, making it suitable for manufacturing optical instruments and viewing windows subjected to high‑energy radiation.
4. Colored Optical Glass
Also known as filter glass, it exhibits selective absorption and transmission characteristics at specific wavelengths across the ultraviolet, visible, and infrared regions. Based on its spectral properties, it is classified into three types: selective absorption, cutoff, and neutral density. According to its coloration mechanism, it is further divided into ion‑coloring, metal‑colloid coloring, and sulfide–selenide coloring. It is primarily used in the manufacture of optical filters.
5. Ultraviolet and Infrared Optical Glasses
It exhibits specific optical constants and high transmittance in the ultraviolet or infrared spectral regions, making it suitable for use in ultraviolet and infrared optical instruments or as a window material.
