Optical lens It is an indispensable optical component in many optical systems. Optical lenses primarily serve to form images, focus light, collimate beams, and diffuse light. They influence the curvature of the wavefront. An optical lens is a device that can either converge or diverge light. The resulting images may be real or virtual. Optical lenses are widely used in various high‑tech fields, including security, automotive applications, digital cameras, high‑power lasers, and optical instruments.

Many materials are used to manufacture optical lenses, such as optical-grade glass, polycarbonate (PC), polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA), and silicone. Here, we focus on optical lenses made from optical-grade glass. In the future, we will also discuss zinc selenide and calcium fluoride lenses. Optical lenses are crafted from optical-grade glass, which delivers high transparency, excellent light transmission, superior thermal stability, long service life, uniform texture, and outstanding refractive power; however, their manufacturing process is more complex than that of other materials.
Many materials can be used to manufacture optical-grade glass lenses, including fused silica, calcium fluoride, magnesium fluoride, silicon, germanium, zinc selenide, and various types of optical crown glass. The primary products include plano-convex lenses, biconvex lenses, plano-concave lenses, biconcave lenses, super‑spherical lenses, aspheric lenses, meniscus lenses, cylindrical lenses, rod lenses, and cemented lenses.
They are coated with films of various wavelengths using vacuum deposition. For example, an anti-reflective coating is typically applied to lenses to minimize surface reflections, thereby reducing light loss and enhancing image clarity, thus achieving superior optical performance. It is also important to consider the optical cold‑working process for spherical mirrors.
